Making music behind the wire.

Last month Pathway staff and supporters were invited to Christchurch Men’s Prison for a highly anticipated event on the calendar.

Once again several Tū Ora, part of the Navigate Initiative, performed alongside the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on prison grounds. This year’s concert was aptly named Songs of Hope.

Half-a-dozen songs were performed on the day, including well-known ballads Hallelujah and Stand By Me, with Tū Ora leading the percussion and ukulele sections and CSO playing strings and brass accompaniment.

The result was a mix of up-beat drumming combined with more traditional orchestral elements to produce some beautiful music.

For some Tū Ora, it was their first time playing an instrument while for others, it’s a way for them to continue to express themselves while behind the wire.

There was no shortage of inspiration for Tū Ora, with many having family members there to see them perform. It was heartwarming to see how proud they were of what they were doing and seeing them interact with their friends and family afterwards.

It shows that despite the barriers these men face, there are people that are supporting them to make a fresh start. That extends to the CSO, which as part of its community outreach programme has worked alongside Pathway for several years.

Thanks to everyone who came along for supporting our Tū Ora. They did an amazing job and we can’t wait to see what musical delights they’ll come up with next year!
