Reintegration

It’s a partnership.

Partnerships are a two-way street – both parties must be fully, actively involved to make it work.

That is certainly true of the relationship between Pathway Trust and the Department of Corrections, who for close to six years have collaborated to deliver the Navigate Initiative at Christchurch Men’s Prison.

For that reason it’s crucial that Pathway and Corrections are on the same page, so we can provide the best possible outcomes for our Tū Ora.

Recently, Pathway’s reintegration navigators, senior Department of Corrections staff based at Christchurch Men’s Prison and the prison officers that work specifically in the Navigate Initiative unit came together to discuss the ground- breaking programme and its shape going forward.

A major topic discussed was the challenge of building on what has been achieved in the unit with our Tū Ora, given a large number of our men have completed their sentences and are living meaningful lives in the community.

Pathway reintegration manager Aland Fish says Corrections are “really impressed” with the overall effectiveness of the NI in reducing repeat offending and that it was in everyone’s interests to lean on each other's strengths for the benefit of our Tū Ora committed to making a fresh start, which regular meetings were an important part of.

The whole hui has really helped strengthen the relationship we have with them. There’s change going in the right direction in terms of our collaboration together.”

He says having dedicated time to look at aspects of the work we do as part of our partnership with Corrections was thoroughly worthwhile, as was continuing to build the strong relationship we have with the department.

Our partnership with Corrections has created powerful change in the lives of many, both directly and indirectly. The relationship is growing stronger all the time and is reinforced by the positive changes being seen in our men behind bars and in the community.
