Navigate Initiative

Building vibrant communities within prison walls.

Recently, we launched a new monthly community action initiative that brings the spirit of neighborhood service projects inside the prison walls.

Recently, we launched a new monthly community action initiative that brings the spirit of neighborhood service projects inside the prison walls. Our first event saw participants working together to enhance their living space through landscaping, furniture restoration, and traditional flax weaving. Senior Tu Ora shared their expertise in harakeke (flax) weaving with younger members, creating practical sun protection while preserving cultural knowledge.

The day exemplified our holistic approach to rehabilitation, balancing purposeful work with relationship building. Staff and Tu Ora came together for friendly games of cricket and basketball, followed by a barbecue generously supported by local business Hellers of Kaiapoi. These monthly gatherings are more than just activity days – they're carefully designed opportunities to develop essential life skills. Participants practice leadership, teamwork, and social interaction while taking pride in their achievements. These are precisely the qualities that support successful reintegration into the wider community.

Your continued support enables us to create these meaningful opportunities for positive change. Through initiatives like this, we're helping build stronger communities both inside and outside prison walls, one connection at a time.
